Best Wedding Venues in Marquette, Michigan

Having photographed in Marquette through my past 12 years as a wedding photographer, I recently realized I can offer a unique perspective to couples planning a wedding in this mecca of natural beauty. From elegant ballrooms and bountiful gardens to rustic barns and lakeside marinas, Marquette can offer virtually every type of couple their perfect venue to celebrate their marriage.
So, what follows is an overview of some wedding venues in the Marquette area with a focus on how each is in regards to light. This is not an exhaustive list, only a review of venues that I have personally experienced, most multiple times, in my decade+ of shooting here. Below is the short list so you can jump to whichever you're most interested in seeing photos of and hearing about. Enjoy!

Carp River Gardens
I'll start with Carp River Gardens, a place that feels like a magical fairy land with towering pine trees and ample space for couples to create what they envision. The natural beauty of the Northwoods shines here and wonderful natural light filters through the arching branches that cover much of the property. Being in pure nature, the lighting here is quite wonderful, though the shade and green everything can play with skin tones bit for the inexperienced photographer.

Pros: Beautiful scenes from the start, space to create, surrounded by nature
Cons: Parking can be a bit of an issue (you'll see that become a theme)
Best for couples who want to spend their wedding in mother nature's full embrace and want a garden aesthetic.
The C. Fred Rydholm Gathering Hall at the Marquette Regional History Center is a light filled space right in the middle of Marquette. The enormous windows that cover two sides of the main area offer panoramic views of downtown. They also let in ample amounts of natural light, making this place a photographers dream for those afternoon/evening receptions. Another neat feature is the atrium which allows one to be above the main reception and dance space for a unique view!

Pros: Central Location with good parking, FILLED with natural light (even on cloudy days)
Cons: Aesthetics may not match your vision, lack of ample outdoor/natural space
Best for couples who want a clean, indoor, and light filled reception space in the downtown area.
Belsolda Farms is a legend when it comes to Marquette wedding venues. This lovely piece of land sports an apple orchard, gardens, and a 1960s dairy barn converted into a cozy, string light lit reception space.
Complemented by a getting ready space for the bridal party, Belsolda is a great all in one venue with experienced owners. The array of outdoor spaces means photographers can create many different scenes, though the barn interior is on the darker side, meaning non-flash photos inside will be grainier. Match that with the wooden features and string lights and it might be just the vibe you're going for!

Pros: Indoor and outdoor spaces, rustic feel, good parking area
Cons: The barn can feel a little cramped for larger guest counts, a little ways out of town
Great for couples who love the nature+farm/barn aesthetic and want to get married then go straight into celebrating with their guests.
The historic Landmark Inn, a fixture in the Marquette wedding scene. Offering accommodation and many lovely spaces, the Landmark could be the 'everything-in-one' answer to your wedding planning wishes. Their many suites have great windows and fixtures that create clean and elegant getting ready spaces. Some couples with smaller guest lists even choose to have their ceremony here, staying inside and away from the fickle weather the U.P. is famous for.
Lastly, they are one of the only venues in the area that offer that elegant, European feel that can be difficult to find in the Midwest.
In terms of light, being indoor spaces with small to medium sized windows, most photographers will be using additional light sources to capture the best shots in many situations here.
Pros: Elegant, stunning views from top floors, multiple spaces to choose from, walkable to downtown
Cons: Can be expensive, parking for larger guests lists can be complicated
Best for couples whose overall theme matches the elegant vibe and aesthetics.
The Lake Superior Theatre, also known as the Lake Superior Yacht Yard, is quite a gem. Situated right on the water in the Lower Harbor, the views from this space are one-of-a-kind. Most couples choose a tent to host the dinner portion of the evening, and locate the dance floor near the theatre, where guests can move to a beat while taking in the harbor view and Lake Superior.
The natural light bathing the Yacht Yard is wonderful, so you'll find most photographers grinning from ear to ear while they capture the many different scenes here.

Pros: Truly unique views, abundant natural light, right on the water!
Cons: Parking (though plentiful) can be far from away for guests with mobility issues
Best for couples seeking to have the calming waters of Lake Superior near them while they celebrate with their friends and family.
The Presque Isle Pavilion is a lovely space that mixes a rustic building with nature and direct access to Lake Superior, which is something no other venue on this list can boast. Couples looking for the woodsy feel while having an indoor space available may be interested in checking out the Pavilion. The views of Lake Superior and its shoreline north of Marquette here are pretty hard to beat as well.

Pros: Access to Lake Superior
Cons: The public road that circles Presque Isle and the parking area cuts through the property
Best for couples wanting to be close to nature and the big lake but also have an indoor option in case of inclement weather.
A relative newcomer to the scene, NMU's Northern Center is a great addition to the selection of venues available to couples getting married in the Marquette area. What stands out is the sheer size of the space that can be customized into whatever your vision is. Along with the large reception space (which is windowless), there is a lobby type space that is full of natural light.

Pros: Huge space, parking, central location
Cons: Conference center vibe is not for everyone
Best for couples with a large reception guest list.
Another venue very centrally located is the Masonic Temple. Right on Washington Street, couples will enjoy the high ceilings of the historic ballroom. The classic styling of the spaces means you may not have to change the space with too much decor. The stone flooring can be something to keep an eye on when it comes time to turn the tunes up, as sounds will echo. Lighting will be mostly dependent on the lighting a couple (and the photographer) wants to bring in as the windows don't let in so much natural light.

Best for couples looking to bring in minimal decor and still hold a coherent, elegant style.
This beautiful brewery might be just the spot you are looking for if you love beer and log cabins. Their unique wall of 100+ wooden barrels creates a truly unique backdrop to your wedding. The warmth of the wood creates a cozy space while there are also outdoor areas for enjoying the sunshine and fresh air. When it comes to lighting, the main areas feature many windows, but glare from outside parked cars plus the orange hues throughout can be difficult to manage for an inexperienced photographer.

Pros: Great log cabin aesthetics, specialty farmhouse ales on tap!
Cons: Only serve their own alcohol, smaller capacity than other venues on this list
Best for couples who are fans of microbreweries and have a smaller guest list.
The Ore Dock Brewing Company needs no introduction for anyone familiar with Marquette. Their beautiful spaces mix industrial and rustic vibes really well and they've got many delicious beers on tap. A stage ready for a live band could be a music-loving couples dream set up. Natural light is not so abundant in this space that is more geared toward late night concerts, but the ambiance and low light can create an intimate feel while leaving space for the trendy flash photos that are becoming more popular these days.
